This nine-day sailing and kayaking journey along Greenland’s west coast offers a chance to quietly explore a remote Arctic environment while learning about the region’s rich cultural traditions. Beginning in Reykjavík, Iceland, we fly to Ilulissat, a lively town known for its proximity to the dramatic, glacier-fed Ilulissat Icefjord. After time to explore the area and take in its rugged beauty, we board the small 16-passenger yacht *Elsie* and set sail into Disko Bay.
Over the coming days, we kayak the peaceful coastlines of Disko Island and Uummannaq, paddling beneath towering cliffs, past floating icebergs, and through quiet bays that invite reflection and focus. Along the way, we may encounter wildlife such as whales, seals, Arctic foxes, and hares, while also observing the hardy plants that survive in this northern climate.
This route has long been travelled by Inuit communities, whose deep connection to the land and sea continues to shape life here. Time spent paddling in these waters offers not only physical adventure but also a thoughtful introduction to their enduring traditions. With ample opportunity for extended hikes and daily time on the water, the trip blends quiet immersion with active exploration—an intimate way to experience this striking Arctic coastline.
