Between the two major drawcards of the Balkans, Dubrovnik in Croatia and Athens in Greece, lie several little travelled countries. Travel to Montenegro and the 5th-century World Heritage-listed city of Kotor set on a spectacular bay before entering forgotten Albania where you will visit the city of Shkoder and its Rozafa Castle as well as the capital Tirana, the mountain village of Kruja and Berat, the town of a thousand windows.
Next enter North Macedonia where you will stay in one of the oldest human settlements in the world, Ohrid, on its namesake lake. Enjoy a cruise on the turquoise waters of Lake Ohrid and a full free day to visit one or more of the many churches and monasteries in the area.
From Skopje, Macedonia’s political and cultural centre, you make a day trip to the Matka Canyon, a deep ravine cut into the mountains which you can explore by boat.
Following an easy hike in Pelister National Park you cross into Greece to reach a town of labyrinthine lanes, Byzantine churches and Ottoman villas, Kastoria.
Using sea-side Litochoro as a base we hike the slopes of Mt Olympus to a beautiful watertfall where on a hot day you may want to take a plunge in the cold waters.
Finally we board a public bus to Athens, where you will have a free evening before the trips comes to an end.
