This seven-day journey explores Sumba, a less-visited Indonesian island known for its traditional villages, rolling savannas, white-sand beaches and turquoise lagoons. Travelling from Tambolaka in the west to Waingapu in the east, the itinerary combines cultural encounters, short walks, swimming and time to relax along the coast.
The trip begins with a visit to Sumba Cultural House, followed by Ratenggaro, a traditional village distinguished by its tall, thatched-roof houses. At Waikuri Lagoon, there is time to swim in clear turquoise water. Further inland, short treks lead through rice fields and past natural springs, while a visit to Karaja Sumba introduces the island’s traditional ikat weaving and a local initiative supporting women’s financial independence.
In Prai Ijing Village, local hosts share aspects of Sumbanese daily life through traditional games, dances and seasonal farming activities. The journey then crosses the open landscapes of Wairinding Hill, where wild sandalwood ponies and buffalo roam the savanna. In East Sumba, a short trek reaches Tanggedu Waterfall, with its sculpted rock formations and inviting pools, before time on the white sands of Purukambera Beach. The final full day offers a relaxed pace and a sunset visit to Walakiri Beach, known for its distinctive mangrove trees. With hotel stays throughout, this trip balances island exploration and cultural discovery with plenty of opportunities to unwind.

Adventure Coordinators Insider Tip:
Sumba has a very different pace and tourism infrastructure from Bali. Distances between attractions can be considerable, restaurants are limited in some areas, and packed lunches are sometimes the most practical option while exploring. Carry water, sun protection and a few snacks, and enjoy the opportunity to experience an island where community traditions and rural life remain central to the journey.
