This long-range South American itinerary links Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile through a journey that focuses on high-altitude landscapes, desert plateaus, and culturally rich cities. It begins in Argentina, typically in Buenos Aires, where time is spent exploring neighbourhoods shaped by European influence, wide avenues, and a strong café culture. From there, the route moves north into the Andean regions, where the scenery shifts into arid valleys, colourful rock formations, and traditional towns that reflect a blend of Indigenous and colonial heritage.
Crossing into Bolivia, the journey reaches some of the most visually striking environments in the region, including the vast salt flats of Uyuni and surrounding high-altitude deserts. These landscapes are defined by wide horizons, extreme clarity of light, and a sense of isolation that contrasts sharply with the earlier urban settings. Travel continues through small settlements where daily life is closely tied to altitude and environment.
In Chile, the itinerary typically concludes in the Atacama Desert and possibly Santiago, offering further contrasts between desert plateaus and modern urban life. The Atacama region in particular is known for its dry valleys, volcanic backdrops, and expansive night skies. Overall, the journey is structured as a gradual transition through some of South America’s most distinctive environments, linking cultural centres with remote natural landscapes in a single overland route.

Adventure Coordinators Insider Tip:

Uyuni is effectively two destinations in one. In the dry season (roughly May to November) it becomes a vast, geometric salt desert with hard hexagonal crusts. In the wet season (roughly December to April) a thin layer of water transforms it into a reflective “mirror world” that erases the horizon entirely.
