The most famous, albeit not the only wall the Romans built to keep the Picts from invading Roman Britannia, Hadrian's Wall straddles the north of England from coast to coast. On this one-week holiday we walk the most interesting sections of this famous bulwark of Roman imperial might and culture.
Starting off on the morning of day 1 we walk along the River Eden to charming Crosby-on-Eden through sweeping countryside, using old bridleways to reach Irthington. Nearby Haltwhistle will be our base for the next three nights as we walk from Lanercost Priory to Birdoswald Roman Fort along the best preserved section of the wall.
Next, explore well-preserved Vindolanda Roman fort and its museum, before hiking the most spectacular section of the wall as it climbs steeply in and out of crags.
The Once Brewed to Sycamore is perhaps the best known section of the trail - the lone Sycamore tree sitting in a narrow dip in the countryside makes for one famous image.
Another day of hiking sees you travelling from Chollerford to Portgate past the famous 8th century Heavenfield Battle Site. Your final walk will take you along the old Military Road and earthen defences of the wall to Rudchester before ending your adventure holiday in Hexham.
