The nine-day trekking adventure through Georgia combines a short introduction to Tbilisi with a multi-day hike through the Caucasus Mountains along the Transcaucasian Trail. After a warm-up walk from Kojori to Tbilisi, including a visit to Udzo Monastery, the journey heads west to Mestia in the historic Svaneti region. Here, a hike to Chalaadi Glacier provides an introduction to the area’s dramatic mountain scenery before the main trek begins.
Over the following four days, the trail leads from Mestia to Ushguli through alpine meadows, forest paths, remote villages and high mountain passes. Highlights include views of the Adishi and Tetnuldi glaciers, snow-capped peaks and traditional Svan stone tower houses. The route passes through villages such as Zhabeshi, Adishi and Iprari, offering opportunities to experience local hospitality and enjoy home-cooked Georgian meals. The final trekking stage reaches Ushguli, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Europe’s highest continuously inhabited settlements, where medieval towers and the 12th-century Lamaria Church reflect the region’s distinctive heritage. After leaving the mountains, the journey returns towards Kutaisi, with a stop at the impressive Enguri Dam and a short orientation walk through the city. Accommodation combines hotels with local guesthouses, providing a close connection to the communities along the route.

Adventure Coordinators Insider Tip:

Timing the Trek: The high passes between Mestia and Ushguli are generally most reliable for trekking from July through September. Snow can linger well into June, and early snowfall is possible in autumn, so the calendar matters as much as fitness when planning a hike through this part of the Greater Caucasus.
