Cycle New Zealand’s Alps 2 Ocean trail on a six-day journey through the South Island’s Mackenzie Basin, alpine lakes, rural valleys and historic coastal towns. Starting in Christchurch, the route follows sections of one of New Zealand’s Great Rides, travelling from the Southern Alps towards the Pacific Ocean. The combination of cycling, short walks, local food and small-town exploration offers a varied introduction to the region.
Begin around Lake Tekapo, riding alongside turquoise hydro canals towards Twizel and Lake Pukaki, with views of the Southern Alps. A visit to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park adds a short walk among some of New Zealand’s highest mountains before cycling beside Lake Ohau. The route then climbs towards Tarnbrae Pass, where views extend across the Mackenzie Basin, before descending towards Omarama. An optional detour leads to the unusual formations of the Omarama Clay Cliffs.
Further east, follow the Waitaki Valley past lakes, dams, vineyards and the remains of historic settlements. Visit the Takiroa Māori rock art site, an important cultural landmark for Ngāi Tahu, and walk among the distinctive limestone formations at Elephant Rocks. The final cycling day follows old railway routes through the countryside towards Oamaru, passing its botanical gardens and Victorian-era heritage precinct before reaching the harbour. With a mixture of gravel cycle paths, quiet roads and some more demanding sections, this trip combines outdoor activity with the landscapes, heritage and food of New Zealand’s South Island

Adventure Coordinators Insider Tip:

The night in Twizel is a good opportunity to experience the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. The area is known for its exceptionally dark skies, and you may see the Milky Way on a clear evening. If conditions are favourable, step away from streetlights after dinner and allow your eyes at least 20 minutes to adjust. Bring a warm layer, even in summer, as temperatures can drop considerably after sunset.
