Our two-week tour of Pakistan starts in the new capital of Islamabad. Here we will visit Faisal Mosque and make a trip to the ancient site of Taxila. The ruins here bear witness to five centuries of cultural influences by Persia, Greece, and the spread of Buddhism.
Next we fly to Gilgit, from where we journey along the famous Karakorum Highway to Passu, our base for the next three nights. We explore remote villages and forts in the Hunza Valley both on foot and by vehicle, and enjoy some of the amazing scenery these mountains have to offer. Enjoy apricot cake and yak burgers, as well as local music and a visit to the most dangerous bridge in the world, the Hussaini Hanging Bridge.
Journey by 4WD to the remote town of Shimshal along a road that took 18 years to complete and wasn't finished until 2003. Visit with local families and hear about their struggles to survive, then strap on your hiking boots to walk along some of the spectacular trails in the area.
We drive by Lake Attabad's bright blue waters and reach Ganish, an ancient settlement along the Silk Road. After a walking tour of the village we arrive in Karimabad, the thriving hub of the Hunza Valley. We will walk up to the strategically placed fortresses of Baltit and Altit forts and enjoy sunset at Duiker for an unforgettable view of the surrounding mountains.
After spending the night in the market town of Gilgit we fly to Islamabad, then drive to Lahore, Pakistan's second largest city, stopping by the Hindu Katas Raj temples enroute. We visit Pakistan’s finest museum, the Lahore Museum, explore the Lawrence Gardens (Bagh-e-Jinnah) and enjoy looking around the bustling markets.
Two full days of exploration are dedicated to the Tomb of Jahangir, the beautiful 17th century Shalimar Gardens and a visit to the Wagah border checkpoint with India to witness the flag-lowering ceremony. We also visit the 1000-year old Walled City of Lahore, home to Delhi Gate, Lahore Fort, grain, cloth and fish markets, and several stunning mosques, including the famed Wazir Khan Mosque.
Our final and delicious dinner is had in Lahore’s famous Food Street.
