This self-guided walking itinerary in southern Spain explores the historic city of Granada and the surrounding Alpujarras region in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The experience combines time in one of Andalusia’s most atmospheric cities with walks through traditional mountain villages set against a backdrop of terraced hillsides and distant peaks. In Granada, there is opportunity to explore its layered history, shaped by Moorish and Christian influences, and to visit neighbourhoods that reflect centuries of cultural exchange. The Alhambra stands as a defining landmark, while the surrounding streets and viewpoints provide context for the region’s architectural and artistic heritage.
Beyond the city, the walking routes lead into the Alpujarras, a landscape characterised by whitewashed villages, irrigation channels, and cultivated terraces that follow the contours of the land. Trails connect small communities where local traditions remain evident in daily life, agriculture, and cuisine. The terrain varies from gentle valley paths to more elevated sections with open views across the mountains. As a self-guided journey, the itinerary allows travellers to walk at their own pace while benefiting from pre-arranged accommodation and detailed route notes. The combination of cultural exploration and mountain walking offers a balanced introduction to this distinctive part of Andalusia.

Adventure Coordinators Insider Tip
