This 16-day journey from Vancouver to Anchorage follows the Cassiar and Alaska Highways through some of the more remote landscapes of British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska. Beginning in Vancouver, the route heads through Whistler and the mountains and lakes of BC’s interior before continuing north through the Cariboo and Bulkley Valley. Along the way, visits with Indigenous communities provide insight into traditional fishing practices, local history and the continuing importance of salmon to northern cultures. The journey becomes increasingly remote around Stewart and Hyder, where highlights include Bear Glacier, Salmon Glacier and opportunities to watch bears feeding at Fish Creek.
Continuing along the Cassiar Highway, the route reaches Boya Lake, known for its exceptionally clear turquoise water, before joining the Alaska Highway and travelling through the Yukon. Whitehorse offers an opportunity to learn about Yukon First Nations culture, while the Kluane region brings glacier-fed rivers, high mountains and a cultural experience with local hosts. Crossing into Alaska, the journey continues through vast wilderness to Tazlina, where the Ahtna community shares its salmon traditions. The trip concludes in Anchorage after travelling through the Chugach Mountains. With a mix of hotels and wilderness camping, this is an active overland adventure focused on northern landscapes, wildlife and Indigenous cultures.
