Fifteen destinations that should be on your travel bucket list

As we can see light at the end of the pandemic tunnel we are seeing people starting to look forward to travelling again. And one thing is clear - travellers are focusing on ticking items off their bucket lists. Here are fifteen destinations and experiences that should be on your travel bucket list.

For nature and wildlife lovers, few places rival with the Canadian Arctic. Endless mountain ranges, some covered in tundra alive with flowers, others as barren as a desert, are the domain of muskoxen, Arctic fox and hares. Deep-blue iceberg-studded straits, bays and seas, are home to polar bear, walrus and whales, including the elusive narwhal. Visit Inuit settlements and remains of expeditions of discovery, hike to marvellous views or kayak the still waters at the bottom of towering bird cliffs. The Arctic will leave you speechless at time, full of energy at others, changed forever. Franklin's Legacy - expedition cruise through the Northwest Passage, 17-day Small-Ship Cruise

A hidden rainforest trail leads to an azure-blue pond, where a waterfall plunges down, inviting you to a refreshing dip. Walk on up the hill discovering a myriad of wildlife and birds along the way. Stand still, awe-inspired at the view over the forest canopy. Zipline down back to your hotel and enjoy a spot of kayaking, rafting, snorkelling or sailing or simply an afternoon on the beach. This is La Pura Vida - Costa Rica style.

Ecuador packs a lot of variety into a small country. The undisputed highlight is the Galapagos Archipelago, with their otherworldly volcanic landscapes and stunning array of wildlife. Snorkel with sea lions and penguins, come close to boobies and albatrosses, iguanas and tortoises and watch whales. This is nature in its primordial state, nature as it used to be.

Peru, the land where Spanish, indigenous, African and Asian influences mix, where trails wend their way through deep valleys and over high passes, past half-forgotten Inca ruins to reach the citadel at Machu Picchu. Fly over the geoglyphs etched into the desert at Nazca, visit remote communities and see how old ways live on at Lake Titicaca, explore colonial towns such as Cuzco and Arequipa and join the locals tasting the many culinary treats on offer in Lima. There are no views like it on earth - the towering granite pillars of Chile's Torres del Paine, reflected in the waters of Lago Nordenskjöld. Its counterpart on the Argentinean side is the Fitzroy range, offering world-class hiking, ice climbing and camping amidst some of the most spectacular mountain scenery you will see anywhere in the world. And then there is the Perito Moreno glacier, one of the easiest accessible ice fields in the world and walking along its five kilometre long face is one experience you will not soon forget. Trails of Paine and Fitzroy, 13-day Small Group Holiday

Nature in Iceland is designed to make you feel small - volcanoes covered by ice loom over a verdant green coastline, glaciers grind their way to the ocean, geysers erupt and the northern lights dance in the sky.

All the while culture blooms - from medieval sagas to modern pop-musicians and Nobel-prize winning authors. And then there is the glorious food and the warm, quirky people - what is there not to love about Iceland? Best of Iceland, 10-day Small Group Holiday

Whether you walk among the beautiful rock formations of the White Desert, admire the sunrise from Mount Sinai, or soak in a hot spring in remote Siwa, the magnificent desert is all around you in Egypt. But it is the Nile that is the lifeblood of this dry country, the river that gave us one of the world's oldest civilizations. Witness the pyramids, citadel, mosques and museums in Cairo, the towering Pharaonic temples and Valley of the Kings near Luxor and the masterpiece of a temple Ramses II built in Abu Simbel. Join a Nile cruise and visit edifices where time has stood still for centuries. No matter how you travel, Egypt will leave an impression on you. There is nothing quite like taking a drive through the savannahs of Africa, the golden sun setting towards the horizon, you and the wilderness and a myriad of animals. Or perhaps you feel adventurous and you join a walking safari, stalking elephants, giraffes and antelopes with a guide and tracker. Then there are gorilla treks, sunset boat safaris and night drives. No matter what type of safari you choose, you are bound to have an adventure of a lifetime. Private Safari in Botswana and Zimbabwe - 11 day Private Journey

Between the soaring peaks of the Himalaya and the steamy expanses of India, Nepal is a nirvana for hikers, trekkers and lovers of mountains. And in Bhutan, a land where the Buddhist tradition ensures a respect and reverence for nature, you will find soaring Himalayan peaks rising above deep ravines cloaked in untouched forest.

The moment you set eyes on the Taj Mahal, you know you are seeing an edifice unlike any other. India is like that - it stirs the soul, it challenges your conceptions, it changes you. It is a spectacular mix of people, traditions and landscapes, from Himalayan peaks to the hills, backwaters and beaches of the south, from the sacred Ganges to the deserts of Rajasthan. With hospitality firmly ingrained into the culture, this is one country you will not want to miss.

China conjures up images of the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors, of glittering cities like Shanghai and Hong Kong, of the Forbidden City in Beijing and the Potala Palace in Lhasa, of forgotten oases of the Silk Road and of a cruise down the gorges of the Yangtze.
