We were nearing the end of the day of a long but rewarding day of hiking through some of Nepal’s most rugged terrain. As we neared our tea house, we stepped out onto a narrow ledge to catch our breath and look around.
The air was growing colder by the second, and the sun hung low, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The peaks—some close enough to feel within reach, others like whispers in the distance—caught the light and transformed it, their snowy faces reflecting hues of pink, orange, and a touch of lavender. The shadows stretched across the valley below, blanketing the world in a soft, fading light.
As we watched, the sun dipped lower, sinking behind the mountains in a slow, dramatic arc. For a moment, everything was silent. Even the breeze seemed to pause. The horizon glowed as the last rays broke through mountain crests, illuminating jagged edges and ridges with a final burst of brilliance. Then, as if on cue, night began to descend, a deep blue wash swallowing up the colors of the day. And as darkness wrapped around us, the stars began to prick through the sky, and the mountains took on a new kind of beauty, silent and mysterious in the moonlight.
That sunset stayed with me, a reminder of the immense beauty and peace that exists in the world, often hidden away in high places where you only find it if you push yourself to reach it.
Here are some of the best places to experience beauty on treks across Asia.
