Where to travel for your 2025 adventures

Where to travel for your 2025 adventures

As another year closes, I take stock of where people booked to travel in 2024. Spain, South East Asia, Morocco and Eastern Europe were the most popular destinations.

But I am seeing a shift to destinations - more into the unknown and often further afield. Here is my pick of destinations where you should travel for your 2025 adventures.

Road to Durmitor in Montenegro

Montenegro - stunning scenery

I had the pleasure to visit Montenegro in the summer of 2024 and fell head-over-heels in love with it. Montenegro is an undiscovered part of Europe, blending fantastic mountainscapes with a rich history and culture. From the medieval charm of Kotor’s cobblestone streets to the rugged peaks of Durmitor National Park, this small country offers a variety of great experiences.

Adventurous travellers can hike to panoramic views, or raft or kayak the stunning Tara River Canyon. The Adriatic coastline meanwhile is dotted with picturesque towns, each with unique stories and architecture.

Whether you’re exploring beautiful caves, sipping wine, or marvelling at the cliffside Ostrog Monastery, Montenegro is a destination that promises something extraordinary at every turn. For a deep-dive I recommend Discover Montenegro & Bosnia-Herzegovina and Adventures in Albania and Montenegro, while for hikers, I recommend Balkans Hiking Adventure on the Via Dinarica, a tour I did myself and loved.

Travel to the Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands - remote and raw

The Faroe Islands are a remote group of islands in the North Atlantic, halfway between Scotland and Iceland. They offer a mix of lush landscapes, vibrant birdlife, and a rich cultural heritage. With dramatic cliffs, towering waterfalls, and serene valleys, the islands feel like a place untouched by time. Travellers hike the rugged mountains or find a spot to look for puffins and other seabirds.

Despite their remote feel, the islands are easily accessible - there are daily flights from Canada, the US and Europe - while the islands are interconnected by tunnels and ferries. Torshavn, the capital, blends ancient traditions with modern life, while other villages offer a peaceful, simple style of living.

For nature lovers, history enthusiasts, or those seeking tranquility, the Faroe Islands provide a unique experience that combines breathtaking scenery with rich culture. I have booked myself on Faroe Islands Walking Explorer - wanna come?

El Salvador - a forgotten gem in Central America

El Salvador - a forgotten gem in Central America

El Salvador is a captivating destination that often flies under the radar, but it’s packed with incredible experiences. From its pristine beaches where endangered turtles nest, to its dramatic volcanoes and charming colonial towns, this small country offers a great mix of nature, history, and culture.

The capital of San Salvador, with its blend of modern life and traditional charm, is just the beginning. The real magic lies in the natural beauty that stretches across the country - lush rainforests, crater lakes, and volcanic landscapes that offer endless opportunities for adventure. For those who love culture, El Salvador's colonial towns like Suchitoto offer a glimpse into the past, or where you can learn to make pupusas, the nation’s beloved dish.

The rich history of the country, from the civil war to ancient Mayan sites, provides a deep sense of connection to its past. Hike to the summit of Santa Ana Volcano for stunning views, explore the vibrant Ruta de las Flores, or sample local street food; El Salvador is full of surprises that cater to every interest.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for an off-the-beaten-path escape, El Salvador offers an unforgettable blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty. There is one tour that does the country in depth: Explore El Salvador

Peru - Glamping on the Inca Trail

Peru - Glamping on the Inca Trail

Peru, the land where Spanish, indigenous, African and Asian influences mix, where trails wend their way through deep valleys and over high passes, past half-forgotten Inca ruins to reach the citadel at Machu Picchu. Fly over the geoglyphs etched into the desert at Nazca, visit remote communities and see how old ways live on at Lake Titicaca. Explore colonial towns such as Cuzco and Arequipa and join the locals tasting the many culinary treats on offer in Lima.

One of the most popular treks in the world, the Inca Trail follows ancient pathways to the mountaintop citadel of Machu Picchu.  Beautiful scenery, ancient ruins and high passes are hallmarks of the trek.  The problem was that there never was a hike that avoided camping. Until now. Have a look at Glamping on the Inca Trail. Permits for the hike are limited in number and go on sale each fall for the next year - book well ahead to ensure you get one of those.

Iguassu Falls Brazil

Brazil - under-appreciated despite the variety

A few years ago I travelled to Brazil and was amazed how much variety there is in this beautiful country. It is a country where natural beauty and vibrant culture converge to create an unforgettable travel experience. Its vast landscapes, from the depths of the Amazon rainforest to the sandy shores of its coastline, showcase the country’s incredible geographical contrasts. Yet it remains one of the most under-appreciated destinations in the world.

Nature enthusiasts will find themselves drawn to the Amazon and the lesser known Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland, both brimming with wildlife. At the awe-inspiring Iguazu Falls, the sheer force and volume of the cascading water left me speechless (and that says a lot!).

For those who seek adventure, Brazil offers opportunities to canoe through mangroves, trek through jungles, snorkel in oceans (and rivers!), hike mountain ranges, rappel into a sinkhole, or simply marvel at the delicate balance of its ecosystems.

Brazil's cities are equally captivating. There's Rio, with its famous beaches, vibrant samba rhythms and lively carnival, and the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer statue. In the north don't miss Salvador with its historic streets that pulse with Afro-Brazilian culture, evident in its music, cuisine, and centuries-old architecture. The fusion of influences here tells the story of Brazil’s rich and layered history and the people's warmth, creativity, and joie de vivre are truly infectious.

Whether you’re relaxing with a caipirinha, dancing to samba, or exploring remote corners of the country, Brazil offers an adventure that is as colorful and diverse as the land itself.

I recommend Fantastic Brazil, a tour that will show you all the highlights this diverse Latin American nation has to offer.

South Korea - ancient & modern wrapped in breathtaking landscapes

South Korea - ancient & modern wrapped in breathtaking landscapes

South Korea offers a unique blend of ancient culture, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant modernity. Imagine wandering through historic palaces that echo stories of kingdoms past, then stepping into bustling cities where futuristic skyscrapers coexist with centuries-old traditions. It’s a place where history isn’t just preserved—it’s alive and woven seamlessly into everyday life. The food alone is unforgettable. Korean cuisine is an adventure, from the bold flavors of kimchi to the comforting simplicity of bibimbap.

Nature lovers will find endless inspiration. From the dramatic peaks of Seoraksan National Park to the serene shores of Jeju Island, the country’s landscapes are as diverse as they are stunning.

The energy of its cities is infectious. Seoul pulses with life 24/7, offering everything from world-class shopping and cutting-edge technology to traditional houses, cafes, pubs and restaurants and peaceful temple retreats. Even in its busiest corners, you’ll find quiet spaces that encourage reflection—a rare harmony of chaos and calm.

South Korea’s people are a highlight in themselves, known for their warmth and hospitality. Whether you’re learning a new custom, sharing a story, or simply exchanging smiles, every interaction adds depth to your experience. South Korea isn’t just a destination—it’s a country that stays with you, inviting you to uncover its layers again and again.

I have several tours of South Korea I can offer you, from food adventures to premium trips. The best all-round trip is Explore South Korea.

Kyrgyzstan mountains

Kyrgyzstan - jewel of the Silk Road

Kyrgyzstan is another hidden gem, often overlooked for its more famous neighbour Uzbekistan. Yet the country offers a rare glimpse into the heart of Central Asia’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Nestled in the Tien Shan mountains, Kyrgyzstan's rugged mountainous landscapes are perfect for hiking.

In addition to its wild landscapes, Kyrgyzstan is steeped in history. The 9th century Burana Tower stands as a witness to a past shaped by the Silk Road and its nomadic cultures.

And it is those nomadic cultures that still shape the country today. Our tours offer the chance to stay in yurts by Song Kul Lake immersing you in the traditional nomadic way of life. Dining with local families, and learning about their traditions, brings a deeper understanding of the country’s diverse heritage.

For those eager to step off the beaten path, Kyrgyzstan offers a rare opportunity to explore a country that has remained largely untouched by mass tourism, offering an authentic and intimate experience of Central Asia.

If you prefer to discover the country in depth, our Explore Kyrgyzstan tour spends 11 of its 14 days in Kyrgyzstan. If you love walking, our On Foot in Kyrgyzstan is the trip for you.

safari elephants in tanzania

Tanzania - wildlife haven

Tanzania offers a diverse range of experiences for travellers seeking natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural exploration. Home to the iconic "Big Five," it’s an ideal destination for safari enthusiasts. The Serengeti National Park is renowned for its wildlife, including the annual wildebeest migration, one of nature’s most impressive spectacles. Nearby, the Ngorongoro Crater provides a unique setting for observing animals in a remarkable landscape. On this northern safari circuit, you also have the chance to visit local communities to learn about their traditions and way of life.

For those looking for adventure, Mount Kilimanjaro offers the chance to climb Africa’s highest peak. If relaxation is your goal, the beaches of Zanzibar are a perfect retreat, combining white sands and warm waters with a rich cultural heritage.

Southern Tanzania meanwhile provides opportunities to explore lesser-visited areas such as Ruaha National Park and Selous Game Reserve (Africa's largest wildlife reserve), where you can enjoy quieter wildlife experiences.

I can offer a lot of different safaris to Tanzania, depending on your travel style, your comfort requirements and your budget. Contact me to start planning.

Madagascar - the Indian Ocean's Galapagos

A remnant of ancient Gondwana gone astray and left in isolation for 88 million years, the island republic of Madagascar is home to an astonishing array of wildlife, including over 100 species of lemur. Add to this almost 15,000 plant species, another 100 mammal species and birds, reptiles and amphibians too numerous to count and you start to realize the natural bounty this island harbours.

But there is more to the country than flora and fauna. Incredible beaches, wild limestone pinnacles known as tsingy, beautiful waterfalls and rock pools, thriving markets, traditional villages, gorgeous sunsets, a fascinating history, some of the best hiking on the continent and the most incredible vistas and landscapes all conspire to make Madagascar one destination you will not soon forget. As a matter of fact, one of my most enduring travel memories is waking up to the sound of

Due to the limited road network, most tour operators follow the same route and our Discover Madagascar is a sample itinerary. If you are looking for a more active trip, Active Madagascar is the trip for you.

traveller dawrved by mountains in greenland

Greenland - now is the time to go

Greenland offers endless glaciers but along the coast, mountain ranges are covered in tundra dotted with wildflowers, while others stand stark and barren, reminiscent of a desert. These rugged terrains are home to muskoxen, Arctic foxes, and hares, thriving in this remote wilderness. Visitors can hike to stunning viewpoints, paddle through calm waters beneath towering bird cliffs, or simply immerse themselves in the serenity of this extraordinary place.

The deep blue waters of iceberg-filled straits, bays, and seas provide a habitat for polar bears, walruses, and whales. Exploring these waterways offers the chance to witness these animals in their natural environment. For those interested in culture and history, Greenland’s Inuit settlements and the remains of Norse colonies offer insights into the lives of its past and present inhabitants.

With three new airports set to open by the end of 2026, Greenland is becoming more accessible, making now an excellent time to explore this remarkable destination before visitor numbers grow further.

This summer, Join me on an adventurous cruise, or ask me about one of the many other expeditions cruises to Greenland.
